Urban sustainability assessment for vernacular and traditional built environments

Despite the growing literature on sustainability assessment in urban context, resulting approaches and methods utilise several differing theoretical frameworks lack a unifying vision modus operandi. Innumerable tools instruments have been developed for particular purposes rather narrow goals. Curiously, these remain unable to trace assess vernacular forms traditional built environments, even though environments such as demonstrably possess sustainable principles beside their aesthetic values spatial qualities. This paper reviews background underpinning current context identify general limitations specific applicability environments. Also, this discusses some of cultural qualities form its embedded strategies practices. The concludes with an outline conceptual framework intended develop response natural contexts. A review concepts is followed by thematic analysis limitations, which feeds into conceptualisation new, principle-based framework. total 10 are proposed taking account variation locality site-specific context.
